This was the greatest, sweetest and loveliest book always. It might be short but in this example it worked just fine. Seriously don't stop reading this book only because it's shorter than nearly of NR's books considering this one is a really outstanding read. I haven't read much from this author, only her In Death series and her In the Garden trilogy ... I'm sorry to mention that while I like her In Decease series, I didn't enjoy that much the other one. And eventually I got a bit bored of the In Decease serial because it was more than of the aforementioned (although I know I must give the series another effort considering I really enjoyed the books I read in it).Well I'm glad I all the same tried this one because I had an amazing fourth dimension. I had been reading some books I didn't actually bask that much and so I started reading less and less. I idea I was getting bored of reading.... which for me that is something that makes no sense at all as I accept been reading a volume every 2 days for 2 years now, LOL. And then I switched to this volume and couldn't put it down. What a read! I really recommend this book.

We have a actually cute romance going on here. we have a guy who nobody gave credit while young as he was the "bad boy" of a very pocket-sized boondocks. He goes away for 10 years and comes back proving everybody wrong, with a very steady job and a change on his attitude. He notwithstanding is that sexy bad boy though, the 1 everybody loved to talk about, the 1 all mothers tried to hide their young daughters from and the one all the guys never gave their back to, just now he is more mature and knows his place in life, what he wants from information technology.
And then we have a daughter who came 3 years before at present to town and opened a store which sells antiques. It only takes one look to know they are attracted to each other. Just the romance develops nicely as it takes them fourth dimension to get to know each other. This is not ane of those lame plot-less romances, even though the book is brusque. I swear I felt I got to know the characters much more in many other longer books I've read.

Can't wait to start the next. Welcome to a series of 4 HOT brothers, a book about each. 4 sexy, alpha and ALL MEN. Guys ... give this series a try.

I could practically aroma the potpourri. Once I felt those walls of bric-a-brac closing in, I had to nope out. Plus the battered wife is still with hubby, simply she has ii kids now. Hero is merely going to be her protector/mansplainer isn't he?

Are all of her books like this? I hated the pouty hero and the guarded heroine and the small town gossipy tone.

Possibly I'm just not the correct reader. If y'all accept any NR suggestions, allow me know. I dislike romantic suspense, so that should filter out quite a few titles.

I enjoyed their dull burn chemistry; and the supporting story of Cassie and Dev.
At present the reason this story gets not so skillful stars is
- I find it creepy when heroines date brothers
- I am all for feminism and independence but Regan came out annoying. She was deliberately hurtful to Rafe a couple of times.

This book was a little problematic, but by and large because of Rafe's characterization. Regan is awesome, though her interactions with Rafe are a little too subtly drawn. Which is part of the problem with Rafe'due south characterization, really. Which is function of the problem with Rafe's characterization, really. Y'all see, Rafe is one of those mostly inarticulate men who expresses himself physically—often violently in contexts with other men (say, his brothers). He isn't mean, vicious, or uncontrolled, but it'd be easy to read him as dangerous if you aren't conscientious. Unfortunately, Rafe'due south ain internal monologue doesn't inkling the reader in very well and neither does Regan's. I spent the first half of the novel wondering if Regan was a moron for putting up with him. Only gradually did I brainstorm picking up the cues that she trusted him because of his deportment and begetting rather than his bumbling dialogue (accordingly bumbling, he's that kind of guy) and internal incertitude.

That'due south a really subtle affair to pull off and Roberts only does and so partially successfully in the novel. At heart Rafe is one of my favorite kind of romantic heroes—strong, kind, protective and capable. But that's buried nether a lot of baggage and self-doubt that leads him to wallow in anger and repressed violence a lot of the time and that'due south decidedly unattractive. Regan sees through that more or less immediately, just not explicitly leaving my own agreement of his character lagging significantly behind her own. And that's uncomfortable reading.

The book is mid 90s and is meliorate than most of those from that era in story, but information technology's one of her less successful stabs at characterization. I liked it in the finish, but information technology was tough going for a while, there.

A note almost Steamy: Good steam level for such a curt novel. One or two explicit scenes that weren't terribly long.

A great first to the four-volume series.

Regan was and then concerned by not existence defined by her mother's neediness/dependency on her dad that she defined herself in another way – the reverse of her mother: I don't need help from anybody. It was annoying. Rafe, was way too "me man, you woman" for my tastes, especially in a gimmicky. Mebbe in a parallel/fantasy earth, it would have worked well (equally it commonly does), but not in a contemporary. I was non impressed with either i of them.

Moreover, the small-scale town atmosphere and the dynamic betwixt the MacKade brothers is wonderful, and their banter and antics make them completely irresistible.

The secondary plot revolving around Cassie and her abusive hubby adds depth to an otherwise run of the mill romance considering the problems raised are even so as relevant today as they were when the volume was originally published in 1995. It always astounds me how obtuse and idiotic the legal organisation is when it comes to spousal abuse.

Finally, the story of two civil war soldiers, ane Union and the other Amalgamated, and their link to the Barlow firm is both charming and center-wrenching. Still, the connection between the ghostly occurrences in the house and Regan and Rafe'southward human relationship could have been better developed.

In sum, a relatively light hearted read, which reminded me of why I enjoy Nora'south writing so much.

I skimmed through most of the book. It was very boring with references to the history and the boxing of Antietam, which I simply couldn't find information technology in myself to care about. The haunted house and domestic corruption subplot were just uninteresting and a real diameter.

The writing was superb since it is written by Nora Roberts, only the characters and storyline I hated. Regan was likewise uptight and a hypocrite and the "bad male child" Rafe was merely terrible. He had a slightly crooked nose which is e'er a plough off for me and his actions were despicable. He steals kisses from Regan, flicks open her blazer buttons at any given time without her permission, and carries her like she can't practice anything herself and again without her permission. This is not sexy in whatsoever way and it is disrespectful and creepy. Just a real icky man with caveman tendencies.

This book is outdated and the original covers were unattractive and terrible. I can't even brainstorm to believe that Nora Roberts wrote this!
